Battle of Bull Run

Well we picked the hottest day of the year (more on that later) to gather at Ralph's place for a game of Fire and Fury.  This was set at Bull Run on his handmade specific terrain using part of his great (huge) collection of 6mm H&R ACW troops.

I was the Confederate commander and faced Ralph, Ross and Nick.  The Rebs had a hard time of it for much of the game.

The Battlefield looking North with Bull Run on the right

Bee's Brigade sheltering Evans's reduced Brigade with the Union are on the ridge
Union opposite Bartow's Brigade behind the woods
Up comes another Union brigade while Evans moves to close the gap
Hampton's Brigade comes on - looks a little small doesn't it?
Hampton looks even smaller when you consider the Union forces coming on in the distance

While Hampton held them, Stonewall's Brigade had time to come up

Stonewall about to repulse Sherman's Brigade back across the river

On the other flank Evan's Brigade is about to be hammered

But too late for the Union, Stonewall, Hampton and Bartow have held the right flank

And yet more Confederates are coming onto the table

The Confederates hold Henry Hill and win the game
More troops arriving on Henry Hill to make sure it is held
Now I said that I would give you a bit more on the weather - below is a picture of the car about 5 minutes after getting in to it to go home - this was 5.45pm.  Aircon was keeping me sane inside the car while the outside was getting ready for the bacon and eggs.  I've never seen it get to that level before.

Some Conferedates

Back to ACW.  A plan is forming to break the back of the ACW forces by painting for a specific battle.  The Wheatfield at Gettysburg has a strong pull for me.  Anyone who walks those fields late in the afternoon will feel there is something different about that place.  It was an amazingly heroic struggle.

So in that light, I have painted up these two units to represent the 2nd and 3rd South Carolina from Kershaw's Brigade in McLaws' Division.

And for anyone interested in reading about the battle, this is a great story.  Amazon has them - but I'm sure many other on-line booksellers also do.

ACW Wagons

The start of my large wagon / gun park.  These are three supply wagons that are I will use for either side as the game dictates.  Really nice Museum Miniatures models I think

They are hot off the paiting desk - white glue still hasn't dried fully under the wheels and they still have a dustig of flock.  Why does it only show up when I take a photo?

Union Infantry

These are the first units completed in my ACW component of the Guild 2012 build.  8 regiments of Union infantry.

More ACW to come later this weekend.

ACW equipment build stage

I wanted to do some carts and limbers and thought that if am going to get the spray gun out and paint mixed then I ought to do it for all my equipment at once.

Hence we have:
- 38 Limbers
- 18 Ammo carts
- 5 Battery wagons
- 2 Ambulances
- 7 wagons (plus another 5 on my desk)
- 4 water carts
- 46 guns of various types

This has been hard labour as approx 50% of the wheels had flash between the spokes.

Fewer Union Regiments than I intended

Here a few Union regiments just completed.  I have the troops for another 4 regiments sitting here staring at me - but no more flag bearers.  I discovered after starting painting that each regiment had 2 flags and hence I need twice the number painted.  So need to find some one to supply loose bearers that fit with Battlehonours.

That close I can see all the bits I was lazy with and didn'tr paint - or missed.  Damn.

An ACW interlude

I am busy painting up 9 regiments of Union infantry for the ACW project  that I started last year.  They will join the start that I made as part of the Guild Challenge for 2010 where I painted the stuff below.

While this is going for the next few weeks, I will reach into the kitbag and post up some shots of stuff I have buiolt over the past two years and would only have been seen if you are on the Guild or SOGG forums.
